Frønes and Hermansen already knew each other from projects such as Grand General, whereas Lofthus and Hermansen had previously played together quite a bit in the BlackJazz and Grindstone-days of Shining. Taking inspiration from both jazz-rock, funk, prog rock and chill-out, Solstein offer up an instrumental form of rock where jazz harmony combines with proggy arrangements and soul/funk grooves, the sum of which is a laidback, elegant sound that oscillates between funky fusion and rock.

The music ranges from the heartfelt and gentle to the energetic and explosive, and it's rarely far between those extremes. During four years of studying jazz at the Grieg Academy, the inspiration that accumulated and the expression that remains today is characterized by traditional jazz, newer directions in jazz and improvised music.

- [Soft Ffog](https://isitjazzrecords.no/artists/softffog/): Ever wonder what it would sound like if Jimi Hendrix joined Deep Purple pursuing to sound like Gentle Giant, and then failing miserably because of too much jazz consumption lately? Didn’t think so, but anyhow Soft Ffog´s sound is unique, and draws parallels to the aforementioned acts in somewhat style, compostitions and astetic, but is more rooted in jazz with their prolonged solos and improvisations.

Well, what’s labeled jazz is so much these days, that it even within the jazz scene there’s discussions on what is jazz and what is not. Here, we will release bands and artists that we feel represents jazz for us, be it the classic sounding jazz sounding ones, the really experimental ones, the soft singer/songwriters or the hard rocking proggers.
